When is it time for a tune-up?
When your vehicle isn't actually showing signs of a significant problem, it might be tempting to put off getting to the auto shop for service. However, a tune-up is just the kind of thing that can help to minimize the possibility of a serious issue arising in the first place. It's easy to forget that your car is a complex composition of moving parts that all fit intricately together. As the miles add up, those parts experience wear and eventually need to be serviced.
The general rule of thumb is that, once your vehicle surpasses the 100,000 mile mark, you should get to the shop for a tune-up every 10,000-20,000 subsequent miles. But regardless of mileage points there are certain signs that could mean it's time for you to get in for a tune-up anyway. Here's a look at five of those signs.
Difficulty with Starting Up
While this could be occurring for a number of reasons, one particular possibility is that you're in need of an ignition adjustment.
Decreasing Gas Mileage
Two potential issues here are that you need a filter change, or that you have failing spark plugs. Just because fuel prices have come down in recent times, doesn't mean you don't still want to save every last penny at the pump.
This could also be a spark plug issue. If your vehicle has been stalling, it's good practice to take note of the circumstances under which the stalling is happening, and then fill in your mechanic on all the details.
If your vehicle is shaking while you're out on the road, this could well mean that your tires need balancing. Another possibility to consider if this symptom appears is that you're dealing with a failing U-joint.
Again, once your odometer hits 100,000, you'll want to get in for a tune-up at regular intervals thereon out.
