Must Know Fall Maintenance Tips to Increase MPGs

Dallas Car Care BlogFollowing the summer driving season it is important to give your vehicle the attention it needs so it can continue to provide you with a safe and reliable ride for your day to day life. There are several things you can do to ensure your car is in great shape for this fall, and getting you optimal miles per gallon so you can also save time and money at the pump! Use these fall auto maintenance tips for a healthy vehicle.

Tire Care

Under inflated tires are harder to turn over, meaning the engine has to work harder. Low tire pressure can actually decrease your fuel mileage by as much as two miles per gallon or more. If your tires look a little low stop by the auto repair shop to have them checked out. While you're at it be sure there is no cracked or bubbling rubber.

Change the Air Filter

Your vehicle runs on a mixture of oxygen and gas, and if air can't make it past a dirty air filter your car's engine will compensate by burning additional gasoline, called a rich mixture. A clogged air filter can drop MPGs by 2 miles per gallon.

Change the Oil

If you haven't had your oil changed over the summer be sure to get it done soon. Dirty oil increases the friction between moving parts, making the engine have to work harder than normal, which decreases your MPGs.

Inspect Spark Plugs

Spark plugs are what detonate the mixture of fuel and air to pump the pistons up and down, and if they are dirty or corroded they will misfire. Seeing as they can fire as much as 3 million times for every 1,000 miles traveled, this can end up being a huge waste of fuel.

Check the Gas Cap

A cracked, broken, loose or ill-fitting gas cap can allow fuel to evaporate out of the filler hose. This will usually trigger the check engine light to come on as well as drop fuel efficiency by as much as 2 miles per gallon.
